ATMs, gas pumps, self-checkout machines – there are so many places where we use card readers to complete transactions. While these devices are convenient, they may be vulnerable to scam activity and fraud like any other technology.

One of the most common methods criminals use to take advantage of these machines is installing a card skimmer. A card skimmer is small device placed inside the card reader that can record information when users swipe their card to pay.

Other common tactics include hidden cameras and keypad overlays that record which buttons users push, giving criminals access to their PIN number.

Fortunately, there are ways to keep yourself safe while still enjoying the convenience of a card reader.

1) Be Alert When Paying

One of the easiest ways to keep your card information safe when using card reading devices is staying alert.

First, use terminals in well-lit, high-traffic areas. For example, if you’re going to get gas, choose a pump near the attached convenience store. Because the cashier can see the pump more clearly, criminals are less likely to tamper with the machine.

Second, inspect the machine before paying. Check for anything that looks odd, damaged, or out of place; common signs of card reader tampering include loose or mismatched/bulky parts. If anything looks suspicious, do not use the device and report it to an employee as soon as possible.

Lastly, cover the keypad with your hand when you input your PIN number. This reduces the chance of hidden cameras being able to get a good eye on your personal info.

2) Use a More Secure Payment Method

When using card readers, use a credit card rather than a debit card when possible. This prevents fraudsters from gaining access to the money in your checking account.

Tapping to pay with your card or even your phone can also be more secure options.

When in doubt, the safest option is going into the establishment and completing your transaction with an employee.

3) Keep an Eye on Your Accounts and Report Suspicious Activity

It’s always a good idea to monitor your financial accounts to ensure that everything is as it should be.

If you notice unauthorized transactions on your account, contact your card provider and report it immediately. Many financial institutions will offer refunds for fraudulent transactions and will let you freeze your card to prevent further fraud.
