What is a deductible, and how do you choose a policy with one that fits your situation?
Let’s break it down.
What is a Deductible?
A deductible is the amount you pay on a covered claim before the policy kicks in. – think of it as agreeing to pay the first part of a bill before anyone else helps.
Let’s look at an example. If you have a $1,000 deductible and a covered $6,000 loss, you’ll pay the first $1,000. The insurance payment will cover the rest, up to the policy limits.
How to Choose a Deductible
Choosing a deductible is really a budgeting decision. A higher deductible may lower your monthly premium because you're taking on more of the first layer of any loss. A lower deductible means more from insurance at claim time — but a higher monthly cost.
The right deductible isn't automatically the highest or lowest option. It's the amount you could handle without a financial emergency. If a $2,500 deductible would force you to borrow money after a covered loss, it may not be the right fit even if it saves on the premium.
Pro Tip: Keep your deductible amount sitting in a separate savings account. That way, a covered loss doesn't turn into two financial problems — the damage and the bill.
Also know that some policies have more than one deductible. A home policy may have a flat deductible for most claims and a separate — sometimes much larger — deductible for wind, hail, or hurricane damage. That second deductible is often a percentage of your home's coverage amount, not a flat dollar figure. Always ask what the wind or hail deductible is before storm season.
Review deductibles every year. Your savings and comfort level can change, and a deductible that worked when money was tight may feel wrong a few years later — and vice versa.

Deductible structures vary by policy and carrier. Percentage deductibles for wind, hail, or hurricane may be significantly higher than flat-dollar deductibles.
