Making ends meet isn't always easy. When you're looking for ways to stretch your earnings a little further, knowing where to turn can make all the difference.

We've pulled together some of the best free and low-cost resources South Carolina has to offer,  because a little help from the right place at the right time can go a long way.

Food Assistance Programs

Most areas have at least one food pantry or soup kitchen you can visit. These are typically run by churches or nonprofit organizations, and hours and eligibility requirements will vary by location.

Here are a few directories for Spero’s main service areas:

Depending on your household income, you may also qualify for SNAP, TANF, or EBT benefits through the state. Visit the SC Department of Social Services for details on eligibility and instructions on how to apply.

Many school districts also offer free or reduced-price lunch programs based on household income. This can be a practical way to make sure your little ones get the nutrition they need to succeed.

Library Resources

Every county in South Carolina has at least one library, which makes this one of the most accessible resources in the state — and one of the most underrated.

A library card is typically free, and it gives you access to more than you might expect. Yes, you can check out books, magazines, and other reading materials for all ages. But many library systems also offer a "library of things" — a service that lets you borrow tools, tables, toys, and more. Before you spend money on something you'll only use once or twice, it's worth checking whether your local branch has it first.

Most libraries also offer access to computers, Wi-Fi, and printing and scanning services (printing may carry a small fee). And here's a bonus worth asking about: many library systems offer free day passes to local attractions like museums, art galleries, and zoos. You can always check with your local librarian to see what's available.

Housing and Rental Assistance

Housing and utilities are often the biggest line items in a family's budget. If you're feeling the pressure, there's help available.

The South Carolina HUD website has a wealth of helpful information for a wide range of housing needs. If you’re searching for emergency housing, visit SC 211 and search by zip code.

This list of SC shelters may be helpful, and your nearest Housing Authority can point you toward affordable and government-assisted housing options:

If you have housing but are struggling with paying rent or utility costs, organizations like the Salvation Army and the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) may be able to help.

Home repairs and weatherization can also be expensive, especially as the cost of supplies rises. The SC Office of Economic Opportunity’s Weatherization Assistance Program is worth looking into, along with regional organizations like Rebuild Upstate or your local Habitat for Humanity affiliate.

Financial Counseling

Sometimes, a candid conversation about your financial situation can be just as helpful as specific resources. Many credit unions offer free financial counseling to their members, and Spero Financial is one of them. Our certified counselors are here to help you assess where you are today and create a winning path forward. Schedule an appointment with a Spero financial counselor to get started.

Other organizations offer free financial counseling as well. Search “financial counseling” along with your city name to find additional options near you.
