From September to November 2025, our CEO, Brian McKay, hosted six Coffee Chats — small, casual conversations where he could hear directly from Spero members. These gatherings provided an opportunity for open dialogue, shared experiences, and meaningful insights that will help guide our credit union as we move forward.
Now that the Coffee Chats have concluded, we asked Brian to share what he took away from the conversations.
What inspired the idea for Coffee Chats with the CEO?
"As we continue to grow, it’s important to stay in touch with our members so we can inform our board and management team of their wants and needs. Spending time with them like this gives me a chance to get honest feedback in a more casual setting."
When you step into these conversations, do you have a specific intention, or do you let each chat unfold naturally?
"Several common questions about the economy and the future of the credit union came up ahead of time, so I always went in prepared to talk about those topics. Otherwise, I let each conversation flow naturally."
What has the Coffee Chat experience been like from your perspective?
"Each one gave me a fresh perspective and reminded me of the diversity of needs in our membership. I set out to listen instead of trying to solve everything in the moment, and the experience was overwhelmingly positive—even when members shared areas where we can improve."
Why do you think these conversations are so meaningful for Spero members?
"One of the things that makes credit unions unique is that we’re member-owned, so every member has a say in the direction. I have no doubt we’ll implement many of the ideas presented, and I think they’ll enjoy seeing the results."
Were there any member stories or moments that stayed with you?
"It was wonderful to see members who have been with us for over 30 years show up. One of my favorite moments was when a member in Spartanburg won the raffle and chose to donate his winnings to another member who was present and about to have a baby."
How will the feedback you received shape Spero’s plans or priorities
moving forward?
"When we do our strategic planning, we consider feedback from members, employees, our board, and the broader community. This gives us a 360-degree perspective that informs our direction and decisions."
How did you see the Mind of a Champion core value reflected in these conversations?
"The Coffee Chats were centered on our Mind of a Champion core value. They gave members an approachable way to share feedback and helped our team stay open, coachable, and committed to improving our service."
How do you hope members feel after taking part in the Coffee Chats?
"I hope they walked away feeling like true member-owners — and knowing their voice matters."
